What is the reason for the mud pump not filling water or the amount of sand filling?

May 20, 2022

1. The installation position of the mud pump is too high, which causes the suction height to exceed the suction stroke of the pump. This installation method will also cause air in the pump casing of the mud pump, which is not completely discharged. At this time, the installation height of the mud pump needs to be lowered, and the mud pump can be ballasted on the ship to increase the draft of the ship. If the installation position of the mud pump cannot be changed, there are two solutions:

Use irrigation water to discharge the air inside the pump casing. When the mud pump is turned on, it is necessary to add more water and water until the pump casing is completely filled with water. This method is simple to operate. It only needs to install a water diversion pipeline in the outlet pipeline of the mud pump. It does not require major changes and requires less investment. It is the most commonly used.

Equipped with a vacuum pump (as shown in the figure below) to exhaust the air inside the pump casing. The vacuum pump is turned on for a period of time and continues to pump air until the water pipe is exhausted. This method of vacuuming works well.

2. The inlet pipe of the mud pump is intake air. The inlet pipeline is a place that is easily overlooked or not understood by customers, especially at the beginning of use. It is necessary to carefully check whether the screws at the flange connection of the mud pump inlet pipe are tightened and whether the rubber gasket is damaged. Find and replace it in time.

3. The bottom valve is blocked and the inlet pipeline is not smooth. Some mud pumps are equipped with a bottom valve at the end of the inlet pipeline, and the blockage of the filter screen on the bottom valve will cause the bottom valve to fail to open normally. At this time, it is necessary to hoist the inlet pipeline to check whether the filter screen is blocked, eliminate debris, and check whether the bottom valve is flexibly opened.

4. The steering of the mud pump is wrong, and many customers neglect to check the steering, especially after the shutdown for maintenance. For motor-driven ones, first confirm whether the steering is consistent with the mud pump steering marking requirements, and for diesel engine-driven ones, confirm whether the gears of the gear box are consistent with the pump steering markings.

5. The speed of the mud pump is too low and does not reach the rated speed. Check the speed of the mud pump through the tachometer and adjust it.
